Temporomandibular dysfunction, or TMD, encompasses a range of conditions that affect the health and function of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) or the jaw muscles that control jaw movement. TMD pain is unique to each person, so your treatment should be too. At Atlantic Dental Center, we create custom splints designed to fit your individual needs. These splints, which can cover either your upper or lower teeth, help relax your jaw muscles and guide your jaw joint back into its proper position in the joint space. They are like a gentle reset for your jaw, giving tense muscles a break from the forces that cause pain over time. Many patients wear their splints at night to alleviate pain and help mitigate damage from nighttime bruxism.
